The airport saw some major renovations a few years back and the number of routes that operate out of it is slated to increase. The island’s roads meanwhile have undergone extensive repair/rebuilding and in addition to all of that, many small internal roads have also been upgraded. Many tricky dirt tracks have been made into secure concrete roads, for example – to the benefit of everyone, including investors, who may want to have a house in the deeply rural interior. Just a few years ago their choice here would have been a lot more limited, as there were far fewer roads. Now whole swathes of the island are opening up. Increasingly houses are being built far inland, for example, whereas in the past this rarely happened.
Prospective homeowners now have the possibility to live in dramatic locations, high up over the sea with properties sitting atop cliffs or hidden deep with the jungle with views over unspoilt greenery. Others prefer the equally good settings that have always been a major drawcard here: beachfront properties where you can step from your garden directly onto the sands of some deserted bay, or a villa on one or other of the coastal plains, combining proximity to a town while set in greenery.
The island’s properties have become ever more sophisticated over the last few decades and can rightfully claim to be just as elegant and visually stunning as properties in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, California and the Gold Coast of Australia. Some have won architectural awards; others grace coffee table books; all are a pleasure to live in and make for an idyllic tropical lifestyle.
